Online Marketing

The realities of Online Marketing are VERY different from what you may have been told. ‘Traditional’ online marketing revolves around getting your office ‘listed’ with a supposedly popular website…or to get your own website ranked in the search engines. Of these, typical ‘practice listings’ offer little to no benefit for the amount you spend to be listed for 3 basic reasons:

  • You’re listed with all the other chiropractors.
  • The sites you’re listed on typically get little to no traffic.
  • Because the listings don’t help the potential patient make up their mind, they’ll more often than not end up back at Google.

On the other hand, getting your website created and ranked in the top 10 on Google is definitely a good first step to take. However, most docs end up spending into thousands of dollars learning and implementing ‘SEO Packages’  — a cost that is overinflated, and results that while good, are no where near what you should actually be getting.  Online Marketing with search engines can be divided into 2 categories – ‘Organic’ and ‘Paid’. Organic traffic comes from the ‘natural’ listings in Google, while the paid traffic comes from Google’s PPC (pay-per-click) system known as Adwords.
PPC traffic costs you ‘per click’ – essentially, you get to display a small ad that shows up whenever someone searches for the keywords that you are targeting. If someone clicks on the ad, you pay anywhere from 50 cents to $5 (typically). Compared to this, organic traffic is free, and there’s more of it.

When harnessed correctly, both are powerful and should be used in sync with each other for maximum effectiveness. However, if done incorrectly, not only will you not see good results, you will likely lose hundreds or thousands of dollars on ‘SEO Marketing Firms’ or in PPC costs.

Let’s tackle organic traffic first:

To understand how to market effectively it is important to recognize the potential patient’s mindset. Most potential patients:

  • Search on Google or a similar search engine.
  • Are looking for third-party reviews or endorsements. They trust a casual recommendation MUCH more than just a chiropractor’s own website.
  • Need valid reasons for WHY they should visit a certain chiropractor over another.

For reaching out to potential patients most effectively, this is exactly what we do! First, we create a ‘review’ of your practice from a third-party perspective, highlighting  why the patients should consider you as well as answering the likely questions they may have.

We then rank this article in the top 10 on Google for keywords such as ‘best chiropractor in Area’, ‘Chiropractor in Area’, ‘Chiropractor Zip Code’, ‘Area best chiropractor’ and so on.

This not only gets a large number of potential patients looking at information about your practice, but also encourages them to visit you. There are some other obvious advantages of this method:

  • The entire 2 or 3 page article is focused just on your practice and nothing else. This means you are not competing with other chiropractors crowding the same small space on some ‘listing’ website.
  • Since this is not you saying that you offer great services but instead a third-party view of your office, the patients are much more likely to trust the information and visit you.
  • You can communicate specific unique points about your practice to your patients in a way that basic listings and ads don’t let you. For example, you can mention that you offer decompression using the DRX 9000 or may want to mention that you offer additional massage therapy or that you have free consultations for first-time-patients.

While the benefits of having such an awesome review listed in the top 10 on Google are easy enough to see, there are some really neat ways to benefit from these reviews that are not-so-obvious in general. The Costs

So it all sounds great, but then comes the question of ‘how much will this cost’? Note that most chiropractic ‘marketing services’ today cost hundreds, and in many cases thousands of dollars. What’s more, most of these services are not services at all, but simply theoretical ideas on marketing, or worse, just a listing on a site that patients will never see!

Then consider that this is a ‘done-for-you’ system – something that is almost non-existent in this industry (because most are looking for people that can ‘teach’ this stuff to, without ever doing it themselves!).

PPC Management

As we discussed briefly earlier, PPC can be a mine-field to work through without proper training. Even with proper training, there are a lot of bases to cover such as:
- Selecting proper keywords
- Selecting ‘special’ phrase-match and exact-match keywords
- Targeting the ads using a geographic IP-block.
- Creating ads and maintaining a high CTR (that in turn effects how much you pay per ad!)
- …and a whole lot more!

Probably the biggest problem with PPC advertising is that you can become ‘enslaved’ to it – checking and rechecking your account every week…or even every day, split-testing ads, optimizing landing page scores and so on. It takes away the thing most valuable to you – your time – while also taking your focus away from more important aspects of your practice.
All in all, Pay-Per-Click advertising CAN be a good way to advertise, especially when used in conjunction with Organic listings, but the time, focus, and knowledge required to create and maintain good campaigns can be a pain to handle!
